Penpals

Do you remember a time when ‘Penpals’ were all the rage? At FHMS we run a very successful penpal scheme which twins a UK, or other first world child, with one of ours. The selection is based on age, gender and interests.

It is amazing what contact between the children produces. Ours, of course, see a window onto a world that would otherwise be closed to them but conversely so do their counterparts from the first world. They will learn about what we do in school, very similar actually, what it’s like to live in a mud hut, when there is one TV in the village to watch the football on and what it’s like to have no running water, no electricity and no computer games, through letters, postcards and, now that we are on the internet, email each other. Living in a mud hut, literally, can be a difficult concept for a child from a better-off country to grasp, but it is a learning curve, and a valuable life lesson that they are very privileged. We encourage ours to make small gifts for their overseas penpals for their birthdays and in return, ours love receiving gifts from abroad.

The idea is for the family of the UK child to sponsor one of ours by setting up a Standing Order, for a minimum of £10.00 p.m, or equivalent, which covers their food for a month, or £40.00 p.m. which covers all expenses for your child’s penpal. Please don’t forget to Gift Aid it you are eligible, it all helps!
