Bore Holes

There is an old Sudanese proverb “ You can live without love, but you can't live without water !”

Do you just turn on a tap and out comes clean, fresh water? Well, for the majority of villagers in Vipingo and the surrounding area they don't have that luxury. They rely on bore holes, sunk deep in the ground, that must be pumped by hand to bring the water up.

The bore holes are normally situated within 50 meters of a villager’s home but when they break they may have to walk up to a kilometre to fill their containers 10-15 times per day.  It’s hard, exhausting work which usually falls to the women and children, stopping them being usefully employed.

VVF have identified this problem and have undertaken to repair all 48 broken bore holes in our area.

The average cost of repair is £80.00 per hole and, so far, we have repaired 23.

We have set up a scheme with the local councillor whereby each Bore Hole will have a manager who will record payment of Ksh50 (35p) per month from each surrounding family. This money will be banked and used in the future for further repairs. In this way each small community takes ownership of their Bore Hole and will be responsible for its upkeep.

Once all they have all been repaired future donations will go to pay for new Bore Holes to be drilled and fitted in surrounding villages that at present  don’t have any water.

Your donation will make a massive difference to the villagers’ lives.
