Singing for our Supper

Musician Heather Summers wanted to find a way to help support the charity The Vipingo Village Fund that her daughter Sian Summers was volunteering for. After ideas, grant applications and getting recording equipment together the journey began. Sian worked with all the teachers and children at Future Hope Montessori School, Vipingo, Kenya, whilst Heather and Music Producer Gareth Lumb (who also volunteered his time) worked at both Ysgol Cae’rFelin and Ysgol Brynsaron primary schools in West Wales. Over the course of a year the children in all three schools have written their own lyrics and music about their lives and their schools. Through the medium of drop box they shared music and video files from Kenya to Wales and vice versa. The children began to learn about each other’s cultures, experiences and languages. The result was astounding with so music rich material to use.

The CD is a fabulous fusion of English, Welsh and Swahili words as the children call and respond to each other through song.

Future Hope children have gained a real sense of ownership for their school by taking part in this project as it has enabled them to help raise funds for their own school.

Watch a day in the life of each of these schools & hear some of the songs from the CD in the videos we created below

Ysgol Cae'rfelin, Wales
Ysgol Brynsaron, Wales

All the children have benefitted hugely from this project which has helped them express themselves, recognise talent and have a huge sense of ownership over their achievements.

“The Welsh Children are like us- they like singing and dancing” Anne, Kenya

“I really want to be friends with the People of Kenya” Jack, Wales
